Contemporary History- Alexandre de Fisterra, table football and the Civil War

The music band Diplomáticos de Monte Alto was founded in 1990 in the town of A Coruña, Galicia. The original members of the band were Xurxo Souto (singer), Rómulo Sanjurjo (accordion), Juan Varela Guni (guitar), Mangüi Martín (bass guitar) and Manuel Viascón (drums). They belonged to the bravú movement. The music bands that took part in this movement sang in Galician and combined rock music with traditional instruments such as bagpipes. Their songs talked about the problems of the younger generations of galicians: relationships, unemployment or emigration. There was even a magazine called Bravú, edited by the galician journalist Xosé Manuel Pereiro.

Oda ao futbolín is Diplomáticos de Monte Alto's most famous song. It was first released in the children's television program Xabarín Club. The song tells the story of Alexandre de Fisterra, a writer who invented table football. The following text is a fragment of an article published by The Guardian that tells the fascinating life of Alexandre de Fisterra:

Publisher and inventor of table football, Alexandre de Fisterra was exiled by dictatorship Francisco Franco. Exile made his life one of constant movement and creativity.

One of the ten children of the radio-telegraphist at the lighthouse at Fisterra, Alexandre grew up in A Coruña. At fifteen he left to study in Madrid. When his father went bankrupt, Alexandre worked as a building labourer, typesetter and tap dancer to pay for his education. The outbreak of the civil war in 1936 found him editing a literary magazine, Paso a la Juventud.

In November, 1936, Fisterra was buried under rubble by a bomb. Left lame, he and his mutilated fellow patients in a hospital in Montserrat, Catalonia, faced a future unable to play football. He explained: "As I liked table-tennis, I thought, why not invent table football?" He found a carpenter who constructed the table and carved the figures. On the advice of a local anarchist, Alexandre patented his invention in Barcelona in 1937.
